Sappho Strikes Again

There is a minor hue and cry from the right wing. They are outraged - outraged - that Kerry mentioned last night that Cheney's daughter was a lesbian. HORRORS!

Kerry and Bush were asked whether or not gay people were gay by choice. Bush said he didn't know. Kerry said no. Kerry said:

"We're all God's children, Bob, and I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was. She's being who she was born as. I think if you talk to anybody, it's not a choice."

Well, the right-wingers just about shit in their pants.

The most notable was mom Lynne Cheney:
"Of course, I am speaking as a mom, and a pretty indignant mom. This is not a good man. What a cheap and tawdry political trick."
The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

Notice the assumption behind the outrage: they obviously believe that Kerry said something bad about Mary Cheney. But of course, he didn't. Mary Cheney isn't in the closet. Mary Cheney doesn't think it's something to be ashamed of. Mary Cheney has been an activist, for goodness' sake.

But the right-wing CLEARLY believes that Kerry mentioned the dirty family secret. The one we don't talk about. "Shhh! You aren't supposed to mention that Aunt Hortense is addicted to morphine. Don't you KNOW that?"

I feel sorry for Mary Cheney. It is so obvious that her own parents find her sexuality shameful. Why else would Lynne Cheney be so angry that Kerry mentioned it? And mentioned it in the context of saying that there was nothing wrong with Mary?

Apparently, Lynne Cheney thinks there IS something wrong with Mary.

Sad.
