They are in a no-win situation, and they have nobody but themselves to blame.
They successfully held their filibuster, and that means they lost.
Republican senators are now on record as voting against the troops and voting with Bush's failure. And just before they leave for the long August break. Their home offices will be flooded with angry phone calls and angry letters from angry contituents, and that pressure will remain when they return after Labor Day - especially for those up for re-election.
This is an albatross around their necks, and Senator Reid drew attention to the fact that the American People have the Republicans to thank for still being in Iraq.
Expect this to come up again and again.
They want it - make sure they own it.

Not that anyone is particularly interested, but my guess is that the Republicans are willing to change course in a major way in Iraq, but they are so filled with hate for the Democrats that they won't give them the satisfaction of going along with any legislation proposed by the left.
I'm betting that the Right will come up with a proposal similar in tone but different in details to what the Democrats have been fighting for and propose it themselves. That way they can claim that THEY got us out of Iraq.
Its disgraceful and if more of the nation were actually paying attention we would all be witnessing the end of the Republican party. Unfortunately most citizens are woefully ignorant and totally miss how Republicans are party first and country second.

I certainly am.

You may be right, but I think that their strategy has been playing to the extremists for so long that they can't change and no longer know how.
I certainly hope you are correct, iggy. Nothing would make me happier. It would be far better for the Left if they continue to pander to the base of extremists. They are thumbing their collective nose to 70% of the public (if you believe the pollsters) and showing how divorced from reality they are. That has to come back to bite them in the ass at some point.
It'll never come back to bite them enough. Imagine if you will, we're in early 2008: Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama wins the Democratic primary, and chooses the other as their running mate.
We would now have to face down the (high) probability of the Republican War Machine latching onto the fact (horrible as it is) that they are the two things that threaten Southerners most: a black man, and a powerful woman. The effects of these two factors can easily be seen in today's politics in areas of the South.
For examples, see the push polling incidents in the 2004 primaries between Bush and McCain, under the question of "What would you think if you knew that John McCain had an illegitimate black child?"
Unfortunately, the politics of racial fear and tension still hold on strongly in the South, and will be put to good use by the Republican scum once again. I can also see many reports of racially based voter disenfranchisement, such as in Florida during the 2000 elections under that fraud, Jeb Bush.
