I wrote that the Republicans CLAIMED that the problem was one of education. As opposed to the REAL problem: they are trying to gut a POPULAR PROGRAM. A program that is popular for the best of reasons: because it WORKS. And they are trying to gut it DESPITE the fact that it works entirely because it doesn't conform to their idealogical agenda. And they are LYING and manufacturing a phony crisis to do so, and for once, the lies are being POINTED OUT and exposed instead of ignored by an obsequious press corps.Iggyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08725276884099666317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6623432.post-1109540276463852672005-02-27T16:37:00.000-05:002005-02-27T16:37:00.000-05:00In your blog entry on February 26th, at 9:08 A.M y...In your blog entry on February 26th, at 9:08 A.M you wrote that, due to an extreme lack of education, many Republicans and Democrats know very little about Bush’s new social security plan. Although this is correct as of now, it is rapidly changing.
The plan, at this point, is relatively new. Even though many agree that Social Security is in trouble, they are unwilling to jump right into privatization. Yet there are measures that are being taken to spread information. Treasury Secretary, John Snow, already has plans to inform millions of senior citizens in Florida. This is especially important since the elderly have the highest voter turnout rates, and since many of the elderly rely entirely on Social Security. Their high voting rate also gives them a lot of pull with their representatives. If they can be convinced that this new plan is beneficial they can easily put a lot of pressure on their state representatives.
Bush himself is receiving aid from many outside interest groups. Also, the Democrats within the house have scheduled “more than 100 town halls this week and another 250 within the next month” simply to discuss Bush’s new plan. Although it is clear that information needs to be spread, it is also clear that the government is taking the necessary steps to inform the people. The evidence for this is seen in http://www.cnn.com/2005/ALLPOLITICS/02/23/social.security.ap/index.html, in an electronic periodical article by CNN posted on Wednesday, February 23, 2005.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
